March is Women’s History Month and while we certainly don’t need a designated month to celebrate the amazing women in our lives, I can’t help but take a few extra moments to thank the women who are shifting how we look at aging. Studies show that women carry the majority of caregiving duties in society and are typically juggling those duties with thriving professional careers, friendships, and more.

We can all find a reason to celebrate women throughout March and beyond. In fact, take time right now to send a quick text message or note to a woman who has inspired you, empowered you, or made you better. Tell her you are thankful for her impact on your life!

In honor of Women’s History Month, The Fitzgerald is thrilled to acknowledge the achievements of one of our Founding Members, Nancy Lensen-Tomasson. She is an Associate Professor, Emerita, at Virginia Commonwealth University and taught Photography and Photographic History from 1979 – 1996. Her photographs are in the collections of the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Corcoran Legacy Collection at the Katzen Arts Center, American University, Washington, D.C.; the New Orleans Museum of Art; and the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. Her book, Women of the Ivory Coast and Mali; Photographs of a Heritage, was published in 2021.

Her series of photographs include: American Indian Jewelers of the Southwest (1975 – 1976); Magnolia Series (1982 – 1985); Tuscany and Umbria (1986 – 1988); Daily Life, Rituals and Environmental of West African Women (1989 – 1995); and Russia After the Cold War (1993 – 1996). Her MA and MFA degrees are from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque.

Nancy’s photography will be on display March 14 to 28, noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Fitzgerald Discovery Center. Nancy will be appearing at the Meet the Artist Reception, Thursday March, 28 from 1:00 to 2 p.m., with books available for purchase.
