Dear First Key Society Members,

February marks Black History Month, a time to commemorate and reflect on remarkable African American trailblazers who have left enduring legacies by igniting a desire for hope and change in our communities. By considering each other’s lives and experiences, and perspectives, we allow a community to be not only about what we have in common but what makes us different.  We often use or hear the word “community” to describe the actual physical space in which our residents live and engage. We sometimes forget that the true goal of a senior living community is to deepen relationships, create feelings of belonging, and provide support for the health and wellbeing of all members.

The theme for Black History Month in 2025 is “African Americans and Labor,” focusing on the significant contributions of Black people to the labor movement and the history of work in the United States. President Joe Biden stated, “Across the generations, countless Black Americans have demonstrated profound moral courage and resilience to help shape our Nation for the better.  Today, Black Americans lead industries and movements for change, serve our communities and our Nation at every level, and advance every field across the board, including arts and sciences, business and law, health and education, and many more.  In the face of wounds and obstacles older than our Nation itself, Black Americans can be seen in every part of our society today, strengthening and uplifting all of America. “Let us remember that diversity – in backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives – makes us all stronger. I want to thank our amazing members and associates who have contributed to this legacy and continue to make a difference in our communities every day.

Lastly, please join me in saying a heartfelt farewell to Megan Chun, our Membership Coordinator who has been an invaluable member of our team. We are grateful for her dedication, hard work, and positive contributions in bringing our community to life. While we’re sad to see her go, we wish her all the best as she grows her career within Kisco. Although she is leaving the Fitzgerald team, she will remain a Kisco associate. If you would like to send her a note, she can be reached via email at megan.chun@kiscosl.com. Thank you, Megan, and best of luck!
