DINING WITH DIGNITY

Our dining associates incorporate daily ritual and research-based methods to enhance appetites and create a dignified, empowered experience. We present two beautifully plated entrées to assist residents in their choices. Thoughtfully set tables and upgraded dishware provide  environmental cues, while a warm towel refresh at the start and end of each meal respects residents’ dignity.

As part of our Kisco Special Diets program, beautifully plated meals are tailored for residents who require modified-texture diets. We go beyond nutrition, crafting enticing dishes designed by our innovative Culinary Directors. We are committed to – and take pride in – breaking the stigmas associated with senior living dining.

When is the right time to consider memory care?

The transition to memory care becomes essential when safety and quality of life concerns take precedence for someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Here are some key indicators that it may be time to consider memory care:

  • Frequent wandering or getting lost
  • Unsafe behaviors, such as leaving the stove on or forgetting to turn off appliances
  • Increased risk of falls or unexplained injuries
  • Difficulty managing daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, or personal hygiene
  • Neglect of household chores or unpaid bills
  • Poor nutrition caused by skipped meals or unhealthy eating habits
  • Frequent memory loss, such as forgetting familiar people or important events
  • Increased confusion about time and place
  • Trouble following directions or maintaining conversations
  • Sudden mood swings, anxiety, agitation, or aggression

If you observe multiple signs, it’s important to consult with healthcare professionals. They can conduct mental status evaluations and recommend the appropriate level of care. Ultimately, this decision is deeply personal and should focus on ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of both the individual and their caregivers.

How should I discuss assisted living or memory care with my parents?

Talking about assisted living or memory care with your parents can be a delicate conversation that requires thoughtfulness and understanding. Here are some key strategies to navigate this important discussion:

  • Start early: Begin the conversation well before a crisis arises to allow for thoughtful planning and consideration.
  • Be empathetic: Acknowledge their emotions, fears, and concerns with patience and compassion.
  • Highlight the benefits: Frame the transition as a way to enhance their lifestyle, offering support and opportunities rather than a loss of independence.
  • Involve them in decisions: Whenever possible, ensure they feel heard and included in the decision-making process.
  • Keep the dialogue open: This is not a one-time conversation—remain available to address concerns and revisit the topic as needed.

Approaching the discussion with care and respect can help foster understanding and make the transition smoother for everyone involved.

What support is available for transitioning to memory care, and how does it ease the process?

We understand that transitioning to memory care is a significant step, and we are dedicated to making the process as smooth and supportive as possible. Our approach emphasizes intellectual enrichment, purpose-driven independence, and meaningful connections, ensuring residents feel empowered to embrace their passions and new opportunities.

We provide peace of mind through a thoughtful support system that includes:

  • Transparent information sharing: Families and residents are kept informed with clear, timely updates as soon as information becomes available.
  • Prompt notifications: Any changes in circumstances are communicated quickly and compassionately to keep everyone reassured and aligned.
  • Personalized care: Tailored care plans ensure that residents receive the support they need while feeling valued and understood from the start.

By focusing on each individual’s unique needs and providing proactive support, we strive to make this transition a positive and seamless experience for both residents and their families.
